Travel Plans
Originally, Travel Plans were defined through guidance as;
"A package of measures aimed at promoting sustainable travel within an organisation, with an emphasis on reducing reliance on single occupancy car travel."
A Travel Plan Resource Pack for Employers: Transport Energy (2004)
In the recently published, Essential Guide to Travel Planning by the Department for Transport, the following definition is offered;
"A Travel Plan is a strategy for managing the travel generated by your organisation, with the aim of reducing its environmental impact. Travel Plans typically combine measures to support walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing. These are reinforced with promotion and incentives and by the management of workplace parking. Travel Plans also include action to reduce the need to travel, such as telecommuting. They can focus on both commuter and business travel".
Travel Plans however, are not generic documents. In order to succeed they need:
- To be developed by or on behalf of organisations according to their specific circumstances;
- The commitment of all of the organisations inhabitants (management, staff, students) in their implementation; and
- To be monitored and driven by a Travel Plan Co-ordinator or process owner.
